In this section, exciting news from stem cell research will be displayed.
Definition
Stem cells are cells found in most, if not all, multi-cellular organisms. These cells are characterized by the ability to self-renew through mitotic divisions and to differentiate into a diverse range of specialized cell types to form a whole organism. The two main types of mammalian stem cells are: Embryonic Stem Cells (ESCs) that are found in blastocysts (which are formed after fertilization), and Adult Stem Cells (ASCs) that are found in adult tissues. In a developing embryo, ESCs can differentiate into all of the specialized embryonic tissues. In adult organisms, ASCs and progenitor cells can act as a repair system for the body, replenishing specialized cells, but also maintain the normal turnover of regenerative organs, such as blood, skin and intestinal tissues.
Importance and applications
Stem cells and therapies based o their features have become object of research and interest in different scientific fields. Scientists have been using different tools such as genomic and epigenomic studies trying to understand the plasticity of these cells and how to use them as therapies for different diseases. These cells have emerged as potential candidates to treat different types of disease. They have been proposed as promising candidates for future therapies to treat diseases from diabetes to cancer.

Umbilical Cord Blood Cells:
Many parents today receive a lot of information and marketing about the benefits of private storage for their baby's umbilical cord blood. Umbilical cord blood cells are an important source of stem cells and could be used to treat diseases that could appear late in adult life. More than 20 companies now offer the service to storage umbilical cord blood cells either for donation or private storage for a family. These companies have defined the storage of umbilical cord blood as a "biological insurance" for the future.
If you have interest in knowing more about this type of service, Genomic Enterprise will help you find the best company to store your baby’s umbilical cord blood. Genomic Enterprise will also help you understand the importance of storing these cells and keep you and your family updated with the research related to this field.
